The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter and less crowded trekking experience. This route is known for its gentle gradients, steady ascent, and striking contrasts between dry northern landscapes and lush southern forests during descent.
Ideal for climbers seeking solitude and a more gradual climb, the Rongai Route provides a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems. With fewer climbers and expansive views, this six-day journey blends adventure, comfort, and excellent acclimatization opportunities.
ou arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and are transferred to your lodge in Moshi or Arusha. After check-in, you meet your mountain guides for a detailed briefing, equipment inspection, and final preparations. The remainder of the day is for rest before the climb begins.
The adventure begins at Rongai Gate, near the Kenyan border. The trail ascends gradually through cultivated farmland and pine forest before entering open moorland. The peaceful surroundings and gentle terrain set the tone for the trek. You arrive at Simba Camp at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) for dinner and overnight rest.
The trek continues through heather and moorland zones with wide views across the Kenyan plains. The steady ascent allows your body to adjust to altitude naturally. You reach Second Cave Camp at 3,450 meters (11,320 feet), where the cooler air and vast landscapes signal your entry into higher elevations.
Leaving the main trail, the route becomes more remote and rugged. The terrain shifts to alpine vegetation and volcanic rock, and Mount Kilimanjaro’s massive presence becomes more pronounced. You arrive at Kikelewa Camp at 3,630 meters (11,910 feet) for rest and acclimatization.
A shorter but steeper climb leads toward Mawenzi Tarn, dramatically set beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. The high-altitude landscape feels stark and powerful. You reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330 meters (14,210 feet), one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.
Shortly after midnight, the summit ascent begins. The trail connects with the Marangu Route near Kibo Hut before the final climb to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement. After descending from the summit, you continue to Horombo Camp at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) for overnight rest.
The final descent passes through heathland and lush rainforest, offering a gentle return to lower altitudes. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificates before being transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for an overnight stay.
Departure takes place the day after the trek following an overnight stay in Moshi or Arusha, with transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel.
