The Rongai Route over seven days offers a quieter and more gradual ascent on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border. The additional day allows for better acclimatization, making this route one of the more comfortable options for trekkers seeking a steady climb with fewer crowds.
This itinerary combines expansive northern views, striking alpine scenery, and a scenic descent through the southern rainforest. The extended pacing improves summit success while preserving the peaceful character that defines the Rongai Route.
You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and are transferred to your lodge in Moshi or Arusha. After check-in, you meet your mountain guides for a comprehensive briefing, equipment inspection, and final preparations. The rest of the day is reserved for relaxation before the trek begins.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate, near the Kenyan border. The trail climbs gently through farmland and pine forest before opening into moorland. The quiet setting and gradual ascent make for a comfortable first day. You arrive at Simba Camp at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) for dinner and overnight rest.
The route continues across heather and moorland terrain with sweeping views of the Kenyan plains. The steady climb supports natural acclimatization. You reach Second Cave Camp at 3,450 meters (11,320 feet), where cooler air and wide-open landscapes define the setting.
Leaving the main path, the trail becomes more remote and rugged. Vegetation thins as volcanic rock and alpine plants dominate the scenery. You arrive at Kikelewa Camp at 3,630 meters (11,910 feet), enjoying a quieter night in an isolated environment.
A shorter but steeper ascent leads to Mawenzi Tarn, dramatically positioned beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The high-altitude landscape is stark and striking. You reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330 meters (14,210 feet), one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic camps, allowing for vital acclimatization.
This extra day is dedicated to acclimatization. Optional short hikes around Mawenzi Tarn help your body adjust to altitude while offering stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding alpine terrain. Rest and recovery prepare you for the summit attempt ahead.
Shortly after midnight, you begin the summit ascent, linking with the Marangu Route near Kibo Hut before the final push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement. After descending, you continue to Horombo Camp at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) for overnight rest.
The final descent takes you through heathland and lush rainforest. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificates before being transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned overnight stay.
Departure takes place the day after the trek following an overnight stay in Moshi or Arusha, with transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel.
