Lemosho Route – 8 Days – Ultimate Scenic Ascent

Climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route in 8 Days

The Lemosho Route over eight days offers one of the most rewarding and successful ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. With extended acclimatization time, this itinerary allows climbers to adapt gradually to altitude while enjoying some of the mountain’s most spectacular and remote landscapes.

Beginning on Kilimanjaro’s western side, the route traverses pristine rainforest, expansive moorlands, alpine deserts, and dramatic glacial zones. The extra day enhances comfort, safety, and summit success, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a well-paced and immersive mountain adventure.

Trip Itinerary

  • Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha/Moshi

You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and are transferred to your lodge in Moshi or Arusha. After settling in, you meet your mountain guides for a detailed briefing, gear inspection, and final preparations. The evening is dedicated to rest before the ascent begins.

  • Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp

The journey starts at Londorossi Gate, where formalities are completed before entering the lush rainforest. The trail winds through towering trees and moss-covered branches alive with birdlife and colobus monkeys. You arrive at Big Tree Camp at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) for dinner and overnight rest.

  • Day 2 – Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape opens into moorland and heather. The trail climbs steadily with increasing views across the Shira Plateau. You reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 meters (11,480 feet), where the vastness of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes begins to reveal itself.

  • Day 3 – Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

A gentle but rewarding trek across the Shira Plateau follows, passing volcanic rock formations and unique alpine vegetation. The gradual ascent to Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 meters (12,630 feet) supports acclimatization while offering wide panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.

  • Day 4 – Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower and Return to Shira 2 Camp

This acclimatization day takes you toward Lava Tower at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet). Time spent at higher altitude allows your body to adjust before descending back to Shira 2 Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly increases comfort and summit readiness.

  • Day 5 – Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

The trail crosses high alpine terrain before descending into the scenic Barranco Valley. Passing beneath the imposing Lava Tower and glaciers, you reach Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters (12,990 feet), set beneath the iconic Barranco Wall.

  • Day 6 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with a thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, offering both excitement and breathtaking views. After the ascent, the route traverses ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp at 4,000 meters (13,120 feet), where you rest and prepare for the final stages of the climb.

  • Day 7 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Trekking across stark alpine desert, you arrive at Barafu Camp at 4,670 meters (15,320 feet). The air is thin and the environment dramatic. After an early dinner, you rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

  • Day 8 – Summit Day & Descent to Mweka Camp

Shortly after midnight, you begin the ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The climb is slow and demanding, guided by headlamps and determination. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a moment of triumph. After photos and celebration, you descend to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) for overnight rest.

  • Departure Date

You descend through lush forest to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificates, and are transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for an overnight stay before onward travel the following day.
