The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and remote paths, renowned for its dramatic vistas, diverse ecosystems, and higher success rate for summiting. Over seven days, trekkers traverse lush rainforests, open moorlands, alpine desert, and glacial slopes before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak.
This route provides ample acclimatization time, gradually exposing climbers to higher altitudes while immersing them in Kilimanjaro’s ever-changing landscapes. Expert guides ensure a safe and enriching experience, balancing adventure, comfort, and unforgettable moments on Africa’s highest mountain.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be transferred to a comfortable lodge in Moshi or Arusha. You will meet your guides, review gear, and attend a briefing on the trek. The evening is for rest and preparation before the mountain adventure begins.
The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, where you enter the dense, misty rainforest. Towering trees, hanging moss, and exotic birdlife make each step magical. After trekking through this lush environment, you reach Big Tree Camp at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet), where dinner and overnight accommodation await.
The rainforest gradually opens into open moorland as you climb steadily. Giant lobelias and stunning panoramic views accompany you along the Shira Ridge, culminating at Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 meters (11,480 feet). Afternoon rest allows you to acclimatize while taking in the vast, dramatic landscape.
Continuing across the Shira Plateau, you trek over rocky and volcanic terrain. The landscape feels vast and remote, with sweeping views of valleys and distant peaks. Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 meters (12,630 feet) is a perfect spot to enjoy the solitude of Kilimanjaro’s highlands and prepare for higher altitudes.
Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) and spend time at this high point before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters (12,990 feet). The “climb high, sleep low” strategy supports acclimatization while providing dramatic mountain views.
The day begins with the exhilarating scramble up the Barranco Wall, a highlight of the Lemosho Route. After conquering the wall, you continue along ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp at 4,000 meters (13,120 feet). The terrain offers wide-open vistas and prepares you for the summit push.
Trekking across barren alpine desert, you arrive at Barafu Camp at 4,670 meters (15,320 feet), the final base before summit night. The atmosphere is quiet and stark, and climbers rest early to prepare for the challenging summit ascent in the early hours of the next day.
Around midnight, the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) begins. Trekking under the stars, the journey is slow and demanding. Reaching the summit at sunrise rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views. After celebrating, you descend to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) for overnight rest.
The final descent leads through forest to Mweka Gate, where you receive summit certificates. You will then be transferred to Moshi or Arusha for an overnight stay and later to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.
